Avian Influenza, aka "Bird Flu", is a devastating, highly contagious disease that causes severe illness and death in wild and domestic birds. Over the past two years this disease has been circulating through wild bird populations throughout the US and Montana. This virus can easily infect your backyard poultry if they are exposed to infected birds. Even worse, Avian Influenza can infect humans that come in close contact with infected birds.
One of the best ways to protect your flock is by eliminating contact with wild birds. This can be done by keeping your poultry inside or in an outdoor enclosure that wild birds can't access. Storing your flock's food and water inside and out of reach from wild birds is especially important in reducing exposure risk. Having a protected outdoor enclosure can help reduce contact between potential carriers of Avian Influenza and your flock.
